Profile

Tilinao Lamba holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Daystar University (Kenya - 2006 )and a Master of Science in Counselling Psychology from Keele University (England - 2012). She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology with the United States International University - Africa (Kenya - expected completion: 2025). Tilinao has taught various undergraduate Psychology courses in the Psychology Department at the University of Malawi since 2008, among these being Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Biological Psychology, Child Psychopathology, Foundations of Psychology, Health Psychology and Developmental Psychology. She has also served in academic leadership positions, as the Head of Psychology Department (January 2016 – December 2018) and the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Social Science (January - October 2021). She has fifteen years of experience in peer education, counselling and psychotherapy, and is spurred on by a passion for furthering the accessibility of mental health support for all. In addition to providing student counselling services on campus, she is a counsellor in private practice, assisting clients with issues such as depression, anxiety, relational problems, addiction and substance abuse. Her primary psychotherapeutic approach is Person-Centred Therapy (PCT), a humanistic approach that deals with how individuals perceive themselves consciously and helps them along their journey of attaining self-actualization. She usually combines PCT withs Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), where she teaches her clients how to identify and alter disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on behavior and emotions.
