Dr. Sunduzwayo Madise is the first Deputy Vice-Chancellor of University of Malawi (UNIMA) from June, 2022 appointed by the President of the Republic of Malawi and Chancellor of the University, His Excellency, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera after the recommendation by the University’s Council.
Dr. Madise holds a PhD in Law from the University of Warwick (UK, 2017), Post Graduate Award in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from the University of Warwick (UK, 2015), Master of Laws [LLM], with distinction, from the University of the Western Cape (RSA, 2011), Bachelor of Laws Honours (LLB, Hons) and Bachelor of Science (BSc) from UNIMA in 2009 and 1991 respectively.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor is an accomplished academic. He is also a legal practitioner and has been admitted to the Malawi Bar to practice law in the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal, the High Court and all subordinate courts. He has international academic experience as a visiting lecturer at the University of Pretoria (RSA) and the University of the Western Cape (RSA) as well as an external examiner at the University of the Western Cape and the University of Cape Town. Administratively, he has held several managerial leadership and academic positions. Dr. Madise has been a Chairperson of Internal Transition Unit that has seen the development and review of the governance instruments for the re-stablished UNIMA.
He has also been a member of Council of University of Malawi as Senate Representative as well as a University Senator. Dr. Madise has also been the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dean of Students, Deputy Head and Head of Practical Legal Studies at UNIMA.
Dr. Madise has served in various portfolios including boards and a member of several professional organisations. He is the current serving Chairperson of Malawi Sports Council and Commissioner for Malawi Human Rights Commission. He has previously served as Chairperson of a Taskforce on the Legal Reform for Establishment of City Police in Malawi. Dr. Madise served as Vice Chairman of Malawi Council for Legal Education (2019 - 2020). He is a Commonwealth Scholar, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), a member of Society of Legal Scholars (UK) and a member of the Malawi Law Society.
Dr. Madise is an accomplished publisher with several publications and other academic related outputs to his name. He is an invited reviewer of articles in a number of international peer reviewed journals and academic books.
Dr. Madise supports the Vice-Chancellor in the implementation of the University’s next Strategic Plan, covering the period from 2022-2027. A highly respected senior law academic, Dr. Madise, will serve in his role for five years from 2022-2027.
