The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is pleased to announce the  following short courses tenable at University of Malawi in Zomba and scheduled as follows:

1. SHORT COURSE IN LABORATORY TECHNIQUES

Duration 

5 days (28 August – 1 September 2023)

Targeted  

Audience

•  Laboratory technicians or attendants 

•  Secondary school chemistry teachers 

•  School leavers aspiring to pursue careers in chemistry laboratories.

Aim

Equip trainees with the scientific and technical knowledge and skills needed  to successfully perform key duties within a laboratory or laboratory-related  workplace.

Minimum Entry  Qualifications

MSCE with four credits in science subjects including chemistry/physical  science

Indicative Content 

Chemical Laboratory  Safety, Security and  Management

•  Good laboratory practices 

•  Laboratory safety and security 

•  Handling, storage and disposal of chemicals and  chemical wastes 

•  Classification of chemicals and reagents

Handling and  

Calibration of  

Glassware and  

Small Laboratory  

equipment

•  Cleaning of glassware 

•  Calibration of volumetric glassware 

•  Use of analytical balances 

•  Calibration of small laboratory equipment

Preparation of  

Laboratory Solutions

•  The mole concept  

•  Units of concentration 

•  Preparation of a solution from a solid or liquid •  Preparation of a solution by dilution 

•  Standardization of solutions 

•  Acid base titrations

Quality Assurance in a  Chemical Laboratory

•  Quality management systems 

•  Quality control 

•  Sampling 

•  Errors in chemical analysis  

•  Data treatment  

•  Documentation and its management

Course Fees: MK300,000.00 per head. Please note that each participant is responsible for  her/his accommodation and that the course fees will cater for tuition, lunch  and refreshments.

2. SHORT COURSE IN WATER MANAGEMENT AND HYGIENE 

Duration 

5 days (11-15 September 2023)

Targeted  

Audience 

•  Water quality monitoring assistants 

•  Water and wastewater treatment plant operators  

•  Waters Boards, Water Companies/NGO staff involved in community  water, sanitation and hygiene services 

•  Individuals desiring to start a career in water, sanitation, and hygiene  (WASH) sector

Aim 

Provide knowledge and skills for water supply systems and sanitation  management in Malawi.

Minimum Entry  Qualifications

MSCE with four credits in science subjects including chemistry/physical  science. Those with passes but with work experience in the water sector can  also apply

•  Source water composition  

•  Water pollution – sources and effects 

•  Mechanisms used to transport the water to a water  point (including pumping and plumbing mechanisms  for taps and boreholes)

Water Treatment  and Purification

•  Water treatment unit operations 

•  Water purification at household level 

Water Service  

Monitoring 

•  Water contamination and water quality monitoring  (including stages and quality of monitoring) 

•  Legal instruments for water quality, water resources  management and water abstraction

Water Service  

Administration 

•  Water point siting guidelines 

•  Water billing systems 

•  Community waterpoint management (maintenance  and hygiene promotion)
