DIPLOMA IN STATISTICS
DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
DIPLOMA IN STATISTICS
The University of Malawi - Chancellor College, through the Department of Mathematical Sciences, is pleased to invite applications for a 2 years Diploma in Statistics program to be offered through Open, Distance and E-learning (ODeL). The programme will commence on 17 August, 2020. Teaching and learning will be done online, except during exam and practical sessions, when students will be required to go to Chancellor College E-Learning Centres across the country. The course is being supported by the Strengthening Higher Education Access in Malawi Activity (SHEAMA) program, implemented by Arizona State University with funding from USAID Malawi.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
In recent years, there has been high demand for lower level statistical courses from the general public but also from key stakeholders as evidenced by requests from the National Statistical Office (NSO) and National Statistical System (NSS).
It is costly to attend statistical training outside Malawi. It may also not be feasible to attend a full time residential course. On this setting, distance learning is a viable option. Such demand and considerations has prompted the department of Mathematical Sciences to propose the ODeL diploma programme in statistics.
The diploma in statistics will enhance capacity among staff in government, research institutes, and non-governmental organizations in understanding issues in research, data analysis, scientific report writing and dissemination, so that they can provide appropriate support in research. Apart from the ample theory provided, the programme focuses much on practical in order to provide quick application skills upon joining or re-joining the industry immediately after graduation.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should be holders of MSCE or O-Level certificate of IGSCE or GCE or its equivalent with at least 4 credits including Mathematics and English. Those from SHEAMA targeted districts of Karonga, Kasungu, Salima, Balaka, Mulanje and Chikwawa, especially adolescent girls and young women and persons with disabilities, are particularly encouraged to apply.
TUITION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS
The total mandatory fees payable per student is MK350,000.00 per academic year. Scholarships will be made available to a few candidates who will meet the programme-set criteria.
