DIPLOMA IN STATISTICS OPEN DISTANCE AND E LEARNING ODEL INTAKE FOR THE 2023-2024 ACADEMIC YEAR

1.0 Introduction
The University of Malawi, through the Department of Mathematical Sciences, is inviting applications to enrol into a 4-semester course to be offered in 2023/2024 Academic year. The programme is an Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL), where teaching and learning will be done online except for examinations, which will be done physically. Upon completion and fulfilment of all requirements of the programme, students will be awarded Diploma in Statistics.

2.0 Course Description
The main aim of the programme is to enhance capacity in statistical skills and research execution in Malawi. The programme will equip students with basic to intermediate knowledge and understanding of statistical methods so that they should be able to appropriately support research, monitoring of projects and other statistical undertakings in government and non-governmental organizations.

3.0 Eligibility
Interested applicants should have a minimum of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or any equivalent O-Level qualification with at least 6 subjects passed with credit including Mathematics and English Language.

4.0 Target Audience
The Diploma in Statistics (ODeL) programme targets school leavers as well as individuals working in research institutes, governmental agencies, public authorities, or private consultancies, including those in the fields of health, education, natural resource management, physical planning, health, security or civil aviation, and any institution where data is involved.

5.0 Fees and Mode of Delivery
The programme will be done purely online (Open Distance and E-Learning (ODeL)) except for exam sessions where candidates are required to come physically to designated examination centres of their choice in Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Balaka and Blantyre. The course is non-residential and candidates will be required to make their own arrangements for meals and accommodation. The programme follows UNIMA’s and Department’s semester system. Participants shall be required to pay fees amounting to MWK 450,000.00 for per academic year.

6.0 Application Procedure

Duly completed application forms together with proof of payment of a non-refundable application fee of K25, 000.00. Applicants should attach a deposit slip as proof of payment of an appropriate application fee.

7.0 Application Package
A complete application package MUST include the following:

  • Copies of all relevant degrees/Diplomas/certificates/academic transcripts/notification of results (for 2022 MSCE candidates), which have been indicated on the application form. These must be duly certified as true copies of the originals by a recognized Commissioner of Oaths
  • Original proof of availability of funds for training i.e. official sponsorship letter or bank statements of the applicant.
  • Copy of a bank deposit slip showing the name of the applicant and the amount of application fee paid.
