CUTL holds training workshop for new UNIMA academics
Newly recruited academic staff from various departments at the University of Malawi recently participated in a training workshop organized by the Committee of the University on Teaching and Learning (CUTL). The workshop was held from the 4th to the 6th of September 2024 at Hapuwani Village Lodge in Mulanje and was graced by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sunduzwayo Madise. Also in attendance was the University Registrar, Mr. Martin Matululu, who delivered a presentation on professionalism and integrity.
During the workshop, facilitators covered a range of topics, including key principles for effective teaching, assessment strategies, student engagement, issues of harassment, and the importance of professionalism and integrity, among others. Speaking on behalf of the Dean of Education, Dr. Chikumbutso Manthalu emphasized that the training aimed to equip newly recruited university staff, particularly in academia, with essential teaching skills and a thorough understanding of the institution’s policies, rules, and regulations. He emphasized that although the staff members are considered educated in their respective fields, it is crucial for them to learn how to teach effectively in higher education.
One of the participants, Mr. Chisomo Chimwala, a lecturer in the Mathematics Department who joined the University last year, expressed his gratitude to the management for organizing the training. He mentioned that he gained valuable skills of which he had previously been unaware. He further mentioned that the training had provided him with the tools necessary to fulfill his expected roles.
“While I am knowledgeable in my field of expertise, I lacked certain teaching skills. Through this training, I have learned how to deliver lectures more effectively,” he said. “I am returning with not only an enhanced understanding of my subject but also a better grasp of how to effectively engage with students during lessons.”
The workshop, organized by the University management, concluded with a presentation of certificates to all participants.
