Fashion Department Holds Motivational Talk for Students
As part of preparing students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion and Design, the Department of Fashion and Design within the School of Communications, Arts and Design at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) held a motivational talk on 1st May, 2026, aimed at encouraging students and demonstrating how far a career in fashion can take them.
The event brought together industry experts who interacted with students and shared real-life experiences. The guest of honour, Mrs. Brenda Chitanda, Managing Director of House of Men (HoM), engaged with the students and highlighted various career opportunities in the fashion industry. These include fashion design, garment construction, pattern making, and accessories production, showcasing the wide range of career paths the programme offers.
Mr. Wedson Chatsika, a mature-entry third-year student, also shared his experience of travelling to Uganda, where he spent a full year teaching fashion design and entrepreneurship while serving as a career advisor. His story demonstrated to fellow students that the programme not only prepares them for employment but also equips them to lead and make a difference wherever they go.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Hurdson Chilasa, a staff associate in the department, said the event was organized due to the knowledge that students need motivation and should hear from industry professionals. “Events like this encourage students to work harder and help them establish valuable connections with experts, often leading to internship and attachment opportunities,” he said.
The programme, being relatively new, made the event particularly valuable for students, as it offered them a clearer understanding of their field of study through direct interaction with industry professionals. It provided a platform for students to gain practical insights, ask questions, and better appreciate the diverse opportunities within the fashion industry. The event also highlighted the commitment and passion of academic staff to support and mentor students throughout their studies. Such initiatives ensure that graduates are not only academically prepared but also well-equipped with relevant industry knowledge and connections as they transition into the professional world.
