SLEG Executive Dean’s Trophy Highlights Sport as Part of Holistic Learning

The School of Law, Economics and Government (SLEG) has emphasised that sports and academic life complement each other, urging students to embrace both as part of holistic development. Executive Dean of the School, Professor Happy Kayuni, said this on the evening of 8th May, 2026, during the prize presentation ceremony for the 4th Executive Dean’s Trophy held at Wadonda Lecture Theatre at the University of Malawi.

He noted that universities globally are recognised not only for academic excellence but also for sporting achievements, adding that sports help students develop key life skills such as teamwork, leadership, discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking. The Executive Dean shared details about the origins of the tournament, highlighting the fact that the initiative was designed to bring students together beyond the classroom through healthy competition. He added that it has since grown into part of the School’s culture, as it reflects the broader purpose of university education in preparing students to live and work together. He further observed that sports teach important life lessons, including humility in victory and dignity in defeat, while nurturing leadership and personal growth.

Chairperson of the organising committee, Fanuel Julius, described the tournament as a valuable learning platform, commending the trust placed in students to coordinate the event.

The competition brought together the Economics Society, PAS Society, Law Enforcement Society, and Students’ Law Society, featuring football, basketball, volleyball, netball, relay races, sprint races, chess, checkers, and bawo. Economics Society emerged as champions in football, volleyball, male relay race, and chess; Students’ Law Society won basketball; PAS Society dominated athletics, winning both male and female sprint events as well as the female relay race; while Law Enforcement Society triumphed in netball, bawo, and checkers.
