SLEG’S FINEST: 11 POSTGRADUATES RECOGNISED FOR EXCELLENCE
The School of Law, Economics and Government on 3rd October, 2025 celebrated the academic achievements of 11 outstanding students during the 2025 Postgraduate Excellence Awards.
The awardees, which included one PhD student, were recognised for their exceptional performance in various categories, which included Best Thesis Award, Best Coursework Award, and Best Publication Award.
It was a joyous occasion for the awardees and their families who came to witness the proud moments of their loved ones getting recognised for their efforts.
The School of LEG, which offers six master’s programmes and seven PhD programmes, annually recognises top-performing postgraduate students who have excelled in various categories.
The Department of Economics dominated this year’s awards, with its students scooping seven out of the eleven awards.
Speaking during the event, Professor Happy Kayuni, the Executive Dean of the School, emphasised the importance of recognising academic excellence as a way of motivating students and opening doors for future opportunities.
“This is very important for our university and for the individuals themselves. We have seen that for those who have previously received these awards, it has helped open up their careers. There is a lot of competition for scholarships out there, and such recognition gives our students a strong advantage,” said Professor Kayuni.
He further highlighted that the awards not only motivate students to work harder but also enhance the university’s reputation as the students strive to produce best publications and research.
“These awards also contribute to the ranking of our university. As you know, publications play a significant role in assessing research output. When we produce some of the best in terms of publications and research, it helps our university achieve higher rankings and improves the visibility of our academic work,” he added.
Professor Kayuni encouraged students to continue striving for excellence and to make the most of the opportunities that come with academic achievement.
The students expressed excitement over the recognition and acknowledged the support they received from members of staff who helped them achieve their goals.
“As the UNIMA motto declares, Connect with Excellence, this is truly a great university. It challenges and pushes you to your limits, but at the same time, there is a lot of support from lecturers, other staff members, and even from your peers. It’s a wonderful community of learners to be part of at UNIMA.” said one of the awardees, Dr Thomson Kumwenda.
