UNIMA and UNDP Launch Nzeru Hub: Driving Digital Learning in Malawi
The University of Malawi, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launched the Nzeru Hub on 13th October 2025 at the Wadonda Lecture Theatre. The Hub is a free digital learning platform designed not only for students but also for underserved communities in Malawi. The event was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samson Sajidu, and attended by UNDP officials, UNIMA staff members, and students.
Professor Sajidu welcomed all participants and highlighted that the partnership with UNDP began in May 2024. He further explained that, together with other public universities, they explored strategies to enhance digital literacy and productivity skills among Malawians. In its current state, the project focuses on digital developments that can be implemented in the country to enhance Malawi’s participation in the digital economy. He added that Nzeru Hub marks a significant milestone for UNIMA, especially in addressing challenges such as limited access to learning materials, as students will now have free access to many educational resources.
“Nzeru Hub is more than a project, it is a powerful testament to what we can achieve when we unite behind a common vision,” he said. He also extended his gratitude to UNDP Malawi for their visionary leadership, as well as to the European Union and Irish Aid for their generous financial support.
Dr. Chipo Kanjo from the Computing Department noted that the platform offers various courses that complement those already provided to students at the University of Malawi. Additionally, some of the courses offered are professional in nature, and accessing them elsewhere would be costly. She said that through the Hub, both staff and students can access these courses for free. She emphasized that the Hub is inclusive offering courses for beginners, advanced learners, and professionals alike, ensuring that no one is left behind.
The UNDP Digital and Innovation Analyst under the Inclusive Digital Transformation project, Ms. Phylis Chibisa, stated “Today, we are launching Nzeru Hub, our digital learning platform developed as part of our efforts to bridge the digital divide by providing productivity and digital skills to everyone.” She further mentioned that the learning platform integrates content from several course providers, offering a wide range of subjects. While Nzeru Hub primarily focuses on ICT courses, it is also expanding to include general courses in leadership and professional development.
Nzeru Hub is significant for students as it will enhance their learning and productivity skills, while also preparing them for the job market. The platform offers specialised ICT courses such as cybersecurity and networking, and also provides general professional development courses including communication and report writing to equip students with essential workplace skills as they transition into their professional careers.
