UNIMA Head of ICT Recognised as Outstanding International PhD Graduate in China
The University of Malawi (UNIMA) is celebrating a significant academic milestone following the successful completion of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science and Technology by its Head of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Dr. Bridget Nyirongo at the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) in Beijing, China.
In recognition of her exceptional academic performance and contribution to research, Dr. Nyirongo was honoured as an Outstanding International PhD Graduate for 2026, one of the highest distinctions awarded to graduating international students at the prestigious Chinese institution.
Dr. Nyirongo specialised in Software Engineering, focusing her doctoral research on software refactoring, software maintenance, and intelligent techniques for improving software quality.
Her work has made significant contributions to the fields of empirical software engineering and automated software improvement.
Throughout her doctoral studies, she published research in internationally renowned software engineering platforms, including the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (TSE), one of the world's leading journals in the discipline, and the International Symposium on Software Testing and Analysis (ISSTA), a highly respected global conference.
Her research explored how software systems evolve over time and how intelligent approaches can support developers in enhancing software quality, reliability, and maintainability.
A notable outcome of her research was the development of two innovative software engineering frameworks, ConExtractor and AKIRA, which can be integrated into software development processes to support intelligent code improvement and software maintenance.
Dr. Nyirongo was also recognised as a Distinguished International Student for the 2024/2025 academic year and was selected to deliver the PhD Graduate Representative Speech during the 2026 graduation ceremony, further underscoring her leadership and academic excellence.
Reflecting on her achievement, Dr. Nyirongo has described the recognition as both humbling and inspiring.
"Being recognised as an Outstanding International PhD Graduate is both a humbling and inspiring honour. It represents not only the completion of a PhD, but also years of perseverance, resilience, and personal growth. Throughout my journey, I learned that progress is often invisible until, one day, it becomes undeniable. This recognition reminds me that persistence and dedication can lead to outcomes beyond what we initially imagine," Nyirongo said.
She added that she looks forward to applying the knowledge, skills, and experience gained during her studies to advance education, research, innovation, and technological development in Malawi.
