UNIMA Hosts Malawi-Scotland Partnership to Strengthen Academic Collaboration

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) hosted a delegation from the Malawi-Scotland Partnership (MaSP) on 16 July 2026 to explore opportunities for strengthening collaboration between Malawian and Scottish universities.

The visit formed part of MaSP's initiative to bring together Malawi's public universities in pursuit of a shared goal of strengthening partnerships with Scottish universities to enhance academic cooperation and deliver mutual benefits.

The MaSP delegation, led by the Chief Executive Officer Linda Dembo, held discussions with representatives from UNIMA and Domasi College of Education on expanding collaboration in key areas, including research, research funding, staff development, staff exchange programmes, and research infrastructure.

Among those in attendance were the Executive Dean of the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Professor Cosmo Ngongondo; the Head of the Centre for Social Research, Dr Yamikani Ndasauka; and deans from Domasi College of Education.

Speaking during the meeting, Professor Ngongondo underscored the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing research and staff development.

“Collaborations with Scottish universities could create valuable opportunities for staff exchanges, joint research, capacity building, increased access to research funding, and the sharing of expertise,” he noted.

Through its engagement with the Malawi-Scotland Partnership, UNIMA – which currently has an existing partnership with the University of Dundee in Scotland – hopes to explore additional opportunities to broaden collaboration with more Scottish universities, further strengthening academic and research partnerships.
