UNIMA hosts Manifesto Implementation Unit delegates

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi, Professor Samson Sajidu, hosted members of the Office of the Chief Adviser to the President’s Manifesto Implementation Unit (MIU) on 5 November 2026 at the University Boardroom.

Professor Sajidu welcomed the delegation, which was led by Mr Blessings Chavula, and acknowledged the important role that the MIU plays in tracking progress, promoting accountability and ensuring that government commitments translate into tangible development outcomes for the people of Malawi.

“As a public university, the University of Malawi recognises that it has an important responsibility to contribute directly to the national development agenda, particularly the aspirations of Malawi 2063. Our contribution goes beyond teaching and learning,” he said.

During the meeting, Professor Sajidu highlighted a number of developmental initiatives and institutional reforms that speak directly to the government’s development priorities which include the expansion of access to higher education through increased student enrolment and programme offerings, the expansion of the University’s e-Campus and Open and Distance e-Learning initiatives, and improvements in learning and research infrastructure, among others.

Mr Chavula, who is a Performance Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Specialist, said the purpose of the visit was to appreciate the progress reported by the University and assess its contribution towards the implementation of the Government’s development agenda.

He noted that the University was on the right track.

The delegation also reviewed various areas, including accreditation and ongoing construction projects such as the new Administration Block and a teaching complex under SAVE project, among others.

Mr Chavula further stated that the team had taken note of the challenges currently facing the University and would engage the relevant ministries to ensure that progress is made in addressing them.

He added that, in terms of higher education, the current government aims to ensure that no one is left behind in accessing higher education. He noted that the University of Malawi plays an important role in this agenda by increasing student enrolment, expanding access and offering diverse academic programmes.

He further explained that the various construction projects underway at the University are intended to create more space and improve facilities for students.

The MIU delegation also toured various developments and projects at the University, where members appreciated the ongoing construction works and other innovations being implemented by the institution.
