UNIMA Students Inspire Future Scholars at Police Secondary School

On 24th October, 2025, a team of twelve students and two lecturers from the University of Malawi (UNIMA) visited Police Secondary School in Zomba for a career talk and  motivation session with 156 students from Form 3 and Form 4 at the school.
The visit was organized and coordinated by Mr. Cosmas Sheha, an UNIMA alumnus and current teacher at Police Secondary School. Through his initiative (Future Focus and Career Catalyst), he brought together students and societies from various UNIMA faculties and departments to share their experiences, academic journeys, and words of encouragement.

Among the presenters was Mr. Emmanuel Beyamu, a UNIMA Student Ambassador and Vice President of the Actuarial Science Society, who delivered an insightful presentation on academic focus, personal discipline, and the power of self-belief. The students were also privileged to interact with Ms. Chifundo Kapondera and Ms. Constance Mangani, both lecturers in the Department of Geography, who explained the university’s entry requirements, program structures, and how specific subject combinations at secondary school can lead to different career paths.

In their messages, the UNIMA delegation emphasized the importance of hard work, consistency, and self-confidence, assuring learners that “everything is possible with determination and effort.” At the end of the function, the students were awarded some gifts, which included calculators, mathematical instrument sets and other writing materials, based on to their class performance.

Sgt. Gomezhian Msowoya, an examination officer at Police Secondary School, who is also the patron of Career Guidance and Counselling, expressed gratitude for the presence of UNIMA students. He observed that such interactions are useful for the secondary school students because they create an atmosphere where students interact with people from the academia, who offer on study tips and other forms of advice. He expressed hope that the interactions would students to adjust their time table to tally with their study skills which will eventually improve their performance.

The Head Teacher of  Police Secondary School, Assistant Commissioner Alexander Sinto, expressed his gratitude for the initiative, describing it as timely and deeply motivating. He noted that many students have been struggling with focus and career direction, and the visit reignited a sense of purpose and ambition among them. “This is exactly the kind of mentorship our learners have been missing,” he remarked.

Mr. Sheha, the event’s coordinator, extended appreciation to the UNIMA Marketing Team for their support with promotional materials and to all the presenters who volunteered their time out of passion rather than financial gain. He added, “As a former UNIMA Student Ambassador, I will continue to champion the university’s excellence. This initiative is just one way of connecting with the next generation under our motto ‘Connecting with Excellence’”.

The event concluded with group photos and personal interactions between the visiting team and the students, marking another milestone in UNIMA’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and educational empowerment.
