Profile

Gerson Mutala Phiri, PhD is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Educational Research and Training at the University of Malawi. He has 30 years of experience working in the education sector in Malawi since 1994. He worked with the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) from 2001 to 2021 as an Assessment Specialist. Before that he worked with the Ministry of Education as a secondary school Mathematics teacher from 1994 to 2001. While at MANEB Dr Mutala Phiri initiated several assessment reforms as Director of Examinations, ranging from reforms in examinations development, examinations administration, examinations processing and reporting of examination results. Dr Mutala Phiri was involved in curriculum development for primary education in Malawi, writing of mathematics books for the current Malawi national primary curriculum. Dr Mutala Phiri also conducted several consultancy activities on behalf of the Institution including training of examination administrators, examination developers and markers. He recently carried out a review of the Assessment Framework for Foundational Learning in Malawi and a consultancy on Fundamentals of Test Construction for lecturers at the Malawi School of Government. Dr Mutala Phiri is an expert in SPSS, RStudio, STATA, XCalibre and use of Excel spreadsheet for data analysis. Dr Mutala Phiri is also a lecturer in Testing, Measurement and Evaluation and a theses supervisor for Masters and PhD students at the University of Malawi.
