Research Areas
As an Applied Mathematician, my research focus encompasses the application of mathematical techniques to various fields, including optimisation, mathematical biology, climate modelling, cryptography, and mathematics education. Additionally, I have a keen interest in education policy development and implementation, with a specific emphasis on enhancing access to quality higher education and promoting broader educational opportunities.,
Profile
I am a dedicated public servant with expertise in research, teaching, and leadership. My academic background includes a Bachelor of Education with Distinction from the University of Malawi (1999); an MSc from the same University (2001), and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Humboldt University of Berlin in Germany (2010). My research focuses on applying mathematical techniques to various fields, including optimisation, mathematical biology, climate modelling, cryptography, and mathematics education. I am also passionate about education policy development and implementation, particularly in enhancing access to quality higher education and promoting broader educational opportunities. I have taught various undergraduate and postgraduate courses, such as differential equations, numerical analysis, calculus of variations, optimization, real and complex analysis, and mathematical modelling. My leadership experience includes serving as Director of Higher Education (DHE) and Secretary for Higher Education (S-HE) in the Malawi Government Ministry of Education, where I was on secondment from January 2021 to October 2025. Previously, I was Dean of the School of Natural and Applied Sciences for four years from 2015 - 2019, during which time I was Chairperson of Committee of Deans, and a member of the University Council as well as the University Senate. Before becoming Dean, I held several other administrative positions including Deputy Dean for two years, Head of Department for three years, Deputy Head of Department for two years, and Coordinator of Postgraduate Programs for one year. I have been a board member of several national and international organizations, including Malawi Bureau of Standards, Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee for Southern Africa, the African Regional Labour Administration Centre (ARLAC) Academic Committee coordinated by the University of Zambia; and the Southern Africa Mathematical Sciences Association (SAMSA), where I was its president for 2 years from 2012 – 2014. The positions of DHE and S-HE gave me an opportunity, through training and hands-on practice, to gain experience in Government procedures and processes; governance of state-owned enterprises (I was Ex-officio member of Boards for Higher Education Institutions and organizations); and experience in operations of multilateral organisations as I chaired several meetings of the SADC and AU Technical Committees on Education and Training, Science, Technology and Innovation.
