Profile

I am a Senior Law Lecturer and former Dean of Law. I hold a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the University of Essex and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from the University of Malawi. I am a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Nairobi, where I co-teach modules on environmental governance, disaster risk management, and nature’s rights within the regional Master’s programme on Women, Children, and Nature’s Rights in Environmental Governance. I also serve as a visiting Lecturer at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law where I co-direct the collaborative University of Malawi-UM Carey law school’s Legal Theory and Practice Course on “Environmental Justice, Human Rights and Public Health,” launched in January 2020. At both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, I teach Intellectual Property Law, Environmental Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Private International Law. I have supervised and assessed numerous student dissertations in Intellectual Property Law, Private International Law, and Environmental Law, helping to shape the next generation of legal scholars and practitioners. My research interests include intellectual property rights and the public interest, environmental governance, human rights, agrobiodiversity, seed sovereignty, and farmers' rights. A central focus of my work is examining how legal frameworks and policies impact public interest, particularly in Malawi and other developing regions. My research frequently explores the intersections of intellectual property, public health, human rights, and environmental justice, reflecting a commitment to promoting sustainable development and safeguarding the rights of marginalized communities. I actively contribute to law reform and policymaking as a member of the Malawi Government's Technical Working Group for the Review of the Patents Act. I am one of the advocates for the inclusion of farmer’s rights in seed related laws and policy I have also held leadership roles as a Board Member of the Malawi Environment Protection Authority and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for the Coordination Unit for Environmental Rehabilitation. Internationally, I am affiliated with several professional organizations, including: • The International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property (ATRIP), • The International Council of Environmental Law (ICEL), and • The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Commission on Environmental Law, where I sit on the Teaching and Capacity Building Committee of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law. Additionally, I represent ICEL at the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) and recently represented the Government of Malawi at the Second Substantive Session of the Ad Hoc Open-Ended Working Group on Environmental Law, established under UN General Assembly Resolution 72/277. This group is tasked with negotiating a Global Pact for the Environment.
