Profile
Martin Charles Mashunga Likongwe is a lecturer in Food Science and Nutrition in the Department of Human Ecology and Agricultural Sciences in the School of Natural and Applied Sciences at University of Malawi. He holds a Master of Science in Fod Science and Technology obtained from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Martin holds Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Malawi majoring in Nutrition and Biology and also holds a Diploma in Agriculture from the University of Malawi. He has 12 years of experience in teaching and supervising post graduate and undergraduate students. Martin specializes in Food Science, Nutrition and Food Microbiology. Currently Martin is pursuing a PhD in Agri-food Systems with the UniversitĆ Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Italy. Martin has been coordinator of two projects namely: Afikepo and community based tracking mechanism (CBTM) which have been implemented by the University of Malawi in partnership with UNICEF (Malawi). In both the projects the University of Malawi was supporting Malawi government in the implementation of the Scaling up Nutrition programme interventions. The role of the University of Malawi was to enhance adoption of nutrition interventions through the use of Community Behaviour Tracking Mechanisms. In the Afikepo project University of Malawi built capacity of frontline workers and community based volunteers in community based tracking mechanism in 11 districts and the project ran from January 2020 to December, 2024. The CBTM project was implemented in four districts (Phalombe, Blantyre, Chikwawa and Nsanje) from June 2024 to June, 2025. Martin has also being key in the implementation of food standards in Malawi as he is a member of several technical committees of the Malawi Bureau of Standards.
