Chief Cartographer

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Chief Cartographer in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Cartography, Surveying or Geo-informatics with at least four (4) years’ experience in cartographic environment involving preparation of maps and surveying work;

  • Applicants with Bachelor’s degree in geography should have specialized training in the related field of cartography, map analysis and surveying techniques;

  • Other relevant degrees (e.g. civil engineering) shall be considered satisfactory provided the applicant demonstrates equivalent combination of experience and training to perform the described duties.

  • The applicant should be registered members of a relevant professional body e.g. surveyors’ institute of Malawi or Malawi Institute of Physical Planning.

  • Applicants should possess advanced knowledge and extensive familiarity with the use of CAD and GIS software such as AutoCAD.

  • They should possess knowledge and experience in Remote Sensing and Aerial Photography, Surveying (including of Total Station);

  • Applicants with theoretical knowledge of drone technologies and practical methodologies in making, testing and flying drones will have an added advantage

  • Working knowledge of computers, printers and plotters.

  • Familiarity with general business software such as word processing, spread sheets and databases.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.

  • Ability to prepare and interpret a wide variety of maps

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparing, coordinating and participating in the preparation or review of work plans, policies, work/laboratory manuals, laboratory report books, procedures and related documentation;

  • Responsible for administrative work such as ordering of cartographic materials, equipment and other requisites for the department;

  • Offering technical advice as may be required by academic staff for their research and teaching work;

  • Supervising all cartographic staff in the department;

  • Demonstrating techniques and procedures to students during cartographic laboratory sessions;

  • Preparing cartographic laboratories in digital mapping;

  • Ensuring maintenance of all infrastructure, equipment and instruments in the department and coordinates field courses in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences;

  • Participating in the preparation of Departmental budget;

  • Maintaining an updated inventory of all laboratory equipment and requisites, records on stock and other reports on laboratory operations;

  • Ensuring adherence to safety standards and provides First Aid to accident victims;

  • Participating in the preparation of quarterly and annual operational performance.
