Chancellor College, a Constituent College of the University of Malawi, is inviting applications for various Postgraduate Programmes which will commence in January 2019.
GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR MASTER’S DEGREES
The following are the minimum application requirements for all Master’s degree programmes:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with at least a credit. Candidates with a strong pass (average of 55% and above) may be considered.

Two letters of reference from traceable referees (one of which shall be from an academician) and to be submitted in sealed envelopes.

Evidence of bank payment of an application fee of MK10,000 for nationals and US$50 for international applicants which should clearly indicate the name of the applicant and programme applied for. For National Bank of Malawi deposits at the counter, through MO626 or internet banking, applicants should use this account: Chanco PG application fees, Account No: 300000282543. GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR PHD
In addition to the general requirements above, applications for doctoral degree programmes should meet the following minimum conditions:

A good master’s degree (average of 55% above) from an accredited university. Candidates with work experience will have an added advantage.

A concept note detailing the proposed research topic

Sample of written academic work of which the applicant is the primary author e.g. Masters’ thesis report, journal article.
Conditions of admission

Unless specifically indicated, all Masters’ programmes are full-time and will run for 24 months. The first year is for course work while the second year is for research and thesis writing. PhD programmes run for 36 months (full time) and up to 60 months (part-time).

The tuition fees cover costs of registration, examinations, supervision and institutional overheads. Students are expected to meet costs of research, accommodation, meals, medical cover, books, stationery and learning materials.

The College does not provide accommodation and the students will be required to look for their own accommodation outside the campus.
All programmes operate on a no-fees no-classes basis. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate how they will support their studies either through a letter of commitment from their sponsors or a bank statement.

EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION DEPARTMENT
Name of Programmes: PhD in Education by Research
Fee Structure: MK6,000,000 for the entire period of study.
Duration: 3 years full time and 5 years part-time
Description of Programme: Candidates can study from the following areas: Sociology of Education; Testing, Measurement and Evaluation; Teacher Education/Outcome Based Education; Educational Psychology/Guidance and Counseling; Education Administration and Management; Policy; Planning and Leadership; Philosophy of Education; Curriculum Theory and Development; Special Needs Education/Inclusive Education; Education and Development; and Early Childhood Education.

FACULTY-WIDE PROGRAMME
Name of Programme: MSc in Water Resources Modelling and Governance
Fee Structure: The annual tuition fees for the programme are MK2,250,000 for Malawian nationals and US$3,500 for international students.
Description of Programme: The MSc in Water Resources Modelling and Governance programme consists of course work, research and a thesis. The programme seeks to provide a critical understanding of water resources modelling and governance within which Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) decisions are made. The programme provides theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to make a significant contribution to the management of water resources under considerations of scarcity, equity and sustainability.
Duration of Programme: 24-months (full time)

Description of Programme: MSc in Conservation Biology has course work component in the first year followed by research and thesis in the second year while MSc in Biological Sciences is by research and thesis.

Duration: 36-60 months
Fee Structure: Year 1: MK4,537,500 or US $6,050; Year 2: MK4,537,500 or $6,050; Year 3: MK6,412,500 or $8,550.
Description of Programme: Research and thesis. While candidates with own funding are encouraged to apply, the programme is usually linked to specific research projects carried out through initiatives of members of staff or various collaborators and partners both nationally and internationally.

Description of Programme: This is a 2-year programme offered through block-releases, and involves coursework and thesis.
Additional Entry Requirements: a) Bachelor’s degree in Statistics/Actuarial Science/Mathematics with at least credit from a recognized university, or b) Strong pass degree in Statistics/Actuarial Science/Mathematics with an average of 55% and above. Selected candidates with deficiency in some Mathematics/Statistics courses will be requested to attend bridging course prior to enrollment. Scholarships: Limited full scholarships are available under DELTAS Sub-Saharan Africa Consortium for Advanced Biostatistics Training (SSACAB) project to successful applicants with at least credit degree and aged below 35.

Description of Programme: A 2-year full-time programme involving course work and thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programmes (By Research)
Description of Programme: There are two PhD programmes in Biostatistics/Statistics; and in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics. During the entire period of study, candidates should be prepared to devote at least 90 hours of teaching MSc or tutoring undergraduate students in the department, which is equivalent to offering 3 modules.
Duration: 3-5 year full-time (by research), including supervisor guided reading.
Scholarship Opportunities: Successful candidates for PhD in Biostatistics will be eligible to compete for the available regional DELTAS project Fellowship that covers: 1) Tuition fees and basic medical insurance, 2) Monthly stipend for accommodation and living expenses, 3) Reasonable support for the research project, 4) Bench fees to research institution hosting the student, and 5) Travel costs.

ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT
Name of Programme: Master of Arts in Economics (Non-Residential Programme)
Duration of Programme: 24 months (full time)
Fee Structure: MK4,851,000.00 for nationals which is payable in two equal installments of MK2,425,500.00.
Description of Programme: The Programme consists of two components; namely, a one-year taught course work in the first year followed by research and thesis writing in the second year. Modules are delivered in block-release form in a specified period of not more than three working weeks and these will be sequenced over a period of one year.
Additional Entry Requirements: A good bachelor’s degree from a recognized university majoring in Economics or closely related fields of study. The applicant should also have covered Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics, and Quantitative methods/econometrics with an average grade of a high pass (55% and above). Applicants with a bare pass in their first degree (less than 55% average) and relevant work experience will also be considered.

DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE STUDIES
Name of Programme: PhD in Public Administration (By Research)
Fee Structure: Tuition fee is MK3,600,000 for Malawian nationals and US $4,800.00 for foreigners per academic year.
Description of Programme: This is a 3-5 year full-time PhD programme by research, including supervisor guided reading. During the entire period of study, candidates will be required to participate in scheduled scholarly activities arranged by the Department. These activities include seminars, reading exercises and presentations, and offering tutorials to MA and BA students in Public Administration.
Duration of Programme: 3-5 year full-time
Additional Entry Requirements: Applicants to be considered for the PhD in Public Administration should have a strong Master’s degree in Public Administration/ Management/ Political Science or related disciplines obtained from accredited institutions of higher learning. Entry requirements (MA): Candidates for admission to the MA Degree should have a good first degree (credit+) or its equivalent in English Literature.
Entry requirements (PhD): To be admitted to a PhD Programme, candidates should already have completed an MA. If this is not the case, the candidate may be accepted initially for the MA with the provision that if his/her performance is satisfactory, he/she will then be permitted to continue to a PhD. Subject to certain conditions, research students may be accepted on a part-time basis or, under approved arrangements, to work off campus. Applications for the PhD should be accompanied by a 3-page concept note detailing the proposed research topic.
All programmes will be self-sponsored except for those who may secure funding.
FACULTY OF LAW
Name of Programme: Master of Laws in Commercial Law [LLM (Commercial Law)]
Duration of Programme: 18 Months
Fee Structure: The tuition fee for the entire programme is MK7,875,000 or US$10,500.00 for international students.
Description of Programme: The LLM (Commercial Law) programme consists of coursework, supervised research and thesis. The course modules are delivered at the purpose-built Faculty of Law complex situated at Chancellor College in Zomba where they have access to the National Bank of Malawi Postgraduate Computer Lab, which includes free access to the Chancellor College internet resources, and the MacKnight Machika Resource Centre, which stocks a wide variety of up-to-date library resources relevant to the postgraduate study of Commercial Law.
Additional Entry Requirements: Admission into the programme is open to graduates who have either: (a) Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Upper Second Class degree (or its equivalent); or (b) A Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Lower Second Class degree (or its equivalent) and two years’ experience working on matters directly related to the application of commercial law.
