China-Africa Relations: Historical Context for China’s Current Strategic Aims

About the lecture
The lecture on China/Africa relations will focus on presenting a world historical context for the strategic aims of the Chinese government, and also discuss British colonialism, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) anti-imperial narrative, and empowerment versus disempowerment as competing strategies. In this case then presentation will also further discuss China’s recent ‘One Belt/One Road’ overall plan within that context. Another perspective in the presentation highlights how Chinese investments in the area are considerably misrepresented in Western media.
Speaker’s Biography
Colin Sargent is a graduate of University of Southern Maine and Northeastern University in United States of America. His research interests include colonialism and post-colonialism, international trade, and English-language perspectives of China. He has presented his works at national and international conferences and one of his publications is entitled British Free Trade Delusions and the Opium War.
