SEPTEMBER 2017 POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES INTAKE
Chancellor College, a Constituent College of the University of Malawi, is inviting applications for various Postgraduate Programmes which will commence in September 2017.
GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The following are the minimum application requirements for all the programmes:
a. A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with at least a credit. Candidates with a strong pass may be considered.
b. A detailed CV
c. Certified or notarized copies of academic transcripts and certificates
d. Two letters of reference from traceable referees (two of which shall be academicians) and to be submitted in sealed envelopes
e. A copy of bank deposit slip for application fee of MK10,000 for nationals and US$50 for international applicants. Please indicate the name of the programme you are applying for and deposit the money into the following account: CHANCO SUNDRY INCOME, ACCOUNT NO: 282553, HELD AT THE NATIONAL BANK OF MALAWI, ZOMBA SERVICE CENTRE.
f. Evidence of sponsorship: Preference will be given to applicants who will present credible evidence of funding for their studies.
NOTE: Specific programmes may have additional requirements which must be complied with. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
Conditions of admission
a) Unless specifically indicated, all programmes are full-time and will run for two years. The first year is for course work while the second year is for research and thesis writing.
b) The tuition fees cover costs of registration, examinations, supervision and institutional overheads. Students are expected to meet costs of research, accommodation, meals, medical cover, books, stationery and learning materials.
c) The college does not provide accommodation and the students will be required to look for their own accommodation outside the campus.
SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR PROGRAMMES
The following are the specific details of the advertised programmes:
A. FACULTY OF EDUCATION
NAME OF PROGRAMME: Master of Education (Primary Education)
FEE STRUCTURE: Local students: equivalent of MK 4,125,000; SADC region students: US$6,000; and International students: US$7,000.
LIST OF COURSES OFFERED: The programme offers four options: Education Foundations, Literacy Education, Mathematics and Science Education and Social Studies Education.
ADDITIONAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: (a) B.Ed with at least a credit. Candidates with a strong pass with at least an average of 55% may be considered; or (b) a general degree of equivalent standard and University Certificate in Education (UCE) or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE); and (c) a minimum of two years' experience in Primary Education or Primary Teacher Education.

B. FACULTY OF HUMANITIES
(I) DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
NAME OF PROGRAMME: Master of Arts (MA) Degree in Applied Ethics.
FEE STRUCTURE: Total fees payable per student for the entire program (2 Years) are as follows: MK3,000,000 for Malawian students, US$4,500 for SADC students, and US$6,000 for other international students.
LIST OF COURSES OFFERED:
Core modules: African Moral Practice and the Ethical Theory, Moral Decision-Making, Biomedical Ethics, Research Methods and Methodology, Environmental Ethics, and Business Ethics.
Elective Modules: Developmental Ethics, Public Health Ethics, Public and Private Sector Ethics, and Morality, Law, Politics and the Media.
MODE OF DELIVERY: The modules will be delivered in 4 three-week teaching blocks and 2 two-day exam blocks spread across 1 year. The second component, the research component, will involve research leading to a supervised dissertation.
Students with no background in Ethics will be required to take a bridging module, General Ethics.

(II) DEPARTMENT OF AFRICAN LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICS
NAME OF PROGRAMMES: (a) MA (Pure Linguistics), (b) MA (Applied Linguistics) (c) PhD (Pure Linguistics), and (d) PhD (Applied Linguistics)
ADDITIONAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Applications for MA programmes should have a good first degree (Credit+), or its equivalent in the appropriate subject. Applicants with a higher average pass mark and relevant work experience shall also be considered.
Applications into the PhD Programme should already have completed an MA. If this is not the case, the candidate may be accepted initially for the MA with the provision that if his/her performance is satisfactory, he/she will then be permitted to continue to a PhD. Subject to certain conditions, research students may be accepted on a part-time basis or, under approved arrangements, to work off campus.
DURATION OF PROGRAMME: For the MA degree, it is 24 months maximum (Full-time), or 48 months maximum (Part-time). For the PhD degree, it is 3 years full-time
FEE STRUCTURE: MK1.5 million/p.a. (Local Students), USD 2,500/p.a. (International Students). All programmes will be self-sponsored except for those who may secure funding.

(III) DEPARTMENT OF THEOLOGY AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES
NAME OF PROGRAMME: Master of Theology and Religious Studies
FEE STRUCTURE: MK4,500,000 for Malawian nationals and US $6,000 for international students.
ADDITIONAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Theology and Religious Studies or any other relevant first degree

C. FACULTY OF SCIENCE
(I) DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
NAME OF PROGRAMME: Master of Science in Applied Chemistry
FEE STRUCTURE: The annual tuition fees for the programme are MK1,500,000 for Malawian nationals and US$2000 for international students..
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE:
The programme, which is offered over four semesters (two academic years), is implemented completely on research basis. Students undertake studies on a topic which requires comprehensive application of chemical principles. Typically students take their dissertations in the broad areas of natural products, environmental chemistry, and food chemistry and processing.

(II) DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
NAME OF PROGRAMME: Master of Science in Informatics
FEE STRUCTURE: MWK 1,010,000.00 per year as tuition fees.

Core modules: Informatics Project Management, Research Methodology, Information Systems in Organisations and Business Management and Entrepreneurship
Elective modules: Development of Information Technology Competencies, Mobile Applications Development, Open Source Software Development, Geographical Information Systems, Software Engineering, Internetworking/Network Management, Database Systems, Health Care Applications, Distributed Systems
ADDITIONAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Applicants to be considered under this programme should have a Bachelors degree in the fields of Information Systems, Computer Science, or equivalent qualifications from recognized universities. Applicants with degrees in related applied sciences from Malawi Polytechnic and Mathematical Sciences from Chancellor College can also apply.
