Department of Private Law

Like the Department of Public Law and Clinical Legal Education, the Department of Private Law emanated from the Faculty of Law of the old University of Malawi. The Department focuses on subjects that are largely about the legal relations and consequences between private individuals and non-state actors. Private Law is the field of law that focuses on the legal transactions and relations between individuals and non-state legal persons. The Department contributes to legal professional competences through knowledge and understanding, attitudes, and skills based on legal doctrines, principles, and rules in subjects falling within the arena of private law. Like the Department of Public Law and Clinical Legal Education, the goal of this Department is the development of effective and responsible legal professionals who can skillfully use private law in diverse roles. In the same vein, as the Department of Public Law and Clinical Legal Education, the Department underlines the delivery of a competence-based curriculum. The objective is to develop legal professional competences through subjects that are in the arena of private law. In the same vein as in the Department of Public Law and Clinical Legal Education, the development of knowledge and understanding, attitudes, and skills for the legal practitioner are incomplete without vocational development. Hence, the Clinical Legal Education Unit in the Department of Public Law and Clinical Legal Education also services the Department of Private Law.
