CHANCO ATHLETES AMASS MEDALS AT UMSSA GAMES
From amongst the diversity of college staff – lecturers, librarians, administrators, networking engineers, accountants, office assistants – comes a collection of individuals that have for a number of years represented the college in various sporting competitions at various levels. These are the men and women that form the Chancellor College Staff Sports Association (CCSSA).
The most recent success of the Association comes in the form of victories attained at the intercollege UMSSA 2016 Games, held at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) on 14th May, 2016. The games brought together colleges from the University of Malawi, including Kamuzu College of Nursing, Chancellor College, and the Polytechnic. Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) and Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) also took part.
At the end of the function, Chancellor College teams and individuals went away with a whopping 15 medals. These included six gold medals, four silver medals and five bronze medals, attained in different sporting categories. The Chancellor College volleyball team was also granted a trophy for emerging victorious.
On 17th June, the college held a function in the Senior Common Room to congratulate the athletes. The event was graced by the College Principal, Prof. Richard Tambulasi, who proudly observed that the sports association had shown the truth in the age old saying, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. However, the Principal specifically bemoaned the fact that few academics take part in sporting activities. In closing, he pointed out that the college master plan includes a proposal to expand sporting facilities.
During the function, the President of CCSSA, Mr Philip Neliyo, expressed gratitude to college management, the faculties of Law and Science, and the Department of Political and Administrative Studies (PAS), which provided financial assistance. He also made an appeal to all members of staff to consider joining the sporting activities, pointing out that it is a way of keeping healthy and encouraging camaraderie among staff in different sections of the college. The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Ngeyi Kanyongolo, was present at the function. She pointed out that the assistance rendered by her faculty is simply in line with the commitment to, “promoting the holistic wellbeing of the individual. We want to nurture all aspects of the person, including mental, social and intellectual health”.
The association is currently in preparation for SAUSSA games to be held in Swaziland later this year. As part of these preparations, UNIMA will host staff from the University of Limpopo on 20th July, 2016.
