DEBATING THE ROLE OF THE YOUTH IN CORRUPTION

Corruption is one of the biggest ills plaguing Malawi. This was one of the central points raised at a recent debate on corruption held at Chancellor College.

According to Ms. Samantha Soyiyo, a lecturer in the PAS department, the department was approached by the US Embassy. The Embassy wished to commemorate the World Anti-Corruption day. The department therefore helped to organize the debate. There were two teams involved: the Chanco PAS Society and the Chanco Young Patriots.

The Chanco Young Patriots, who were opposing the motion, “The Youth are to blame for rising corruption in the country”, comprised Dziwapo Chamutolo, Augastino Mailosi, Maya Kateka, and Vanessa Khonje. The PAS Society, as proposers, comprised Norman Kumwenda, Edward Luanja, Mary Zolimba, and Yebo Kalua.

There was a good turn up at the debate, with an audience comprising students at Chancellor College as well as people from outside the college. Soyiyo points out that the debate was helpful for the students. “It is like taking the classroom setup out into the public,” she said. 

At the end of the debate, the participants were given awards by the US Embassy.
