SHORT COURSE IN INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IWRM AND ECOSYSTEM FUNCTIONS FOR WATER PROFESSIONALS AND TECHNICIANS

The Faculty of Science in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences, conducted a short course a short course in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Ecosystem Functions for Water Professionals and Technicians for the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development from 14 to 18 September 2015 at Chancellor College with funding from the UNDPs Global Environment Facility. 

The course drew 25 participants from the Ministry’s Headquarters and District Offices. According to the Course Leader Professor Wapu Mulwafu, the main aims of the short course were to strengthen the capacity of the water and environmental practitioners on the functions of ecosystems and their management within an IWRM approach and  raise an understanding among water professional on the importance of the environment in water resources development, management practices. 

According to the Dean of Science, Dr Levis Eneya, the short course is a condensed version of modules offered under the Master of Science in Water Resourses Modelling and Governance offered by the Faculty of Science. The Deputy Director of Water Resources, Mr Pepani Kaluwa, expressed satisfaction with the quality of the course and optimism that the short course may be run annually. Speaking during the official opening, the Vice Principal of Chancellor College, Associate Professor Samson Sajidu thanked the Ministry for having the confidence in the University of Malawi to stage such an important course. He also expressed hope of continued collaboration extending to other areas of the national development process.
