UNIMA Social Work Students Donate to Grace Orphan Care
In commemoration of World Social Work Day on 18th March this year, the Social Work Students Society at the University of Malawi made a generous donation of assorted items to Grace Orphan Care in Thundu, Zomba. The students, accompanied by Mr. Austin Ndala, a UNIMA lecturer and patron of the society, arrived in large numbers to cheer the children, carrying placards with different messages as a way of celebrating the day.
Grace Orphan Care, established in 2004 by Mr. Ernest Ponde Ponde, has had a significant impact on the lives of many children, providing them with much-needed educational support. Among its success stories, is that of 60 children who have gone on to attain secondary school education. Some of the orphanage’s former beneficiaries are now active supporters of the organization, alongside other well-wishers, helping to ensure the continuity of its mission.
During the handover ceremony, UNIMA students had the opportunity to engage in an interactive session with the orphans, offering words of encouragement to inspire them to remain dedicated to their education despite any challenges they may face. The students also spread awareness about World Social Work Day and the importance of celebrating the efforts of social workers who make a lasting impact on the lives of many deserving individuals.
During the event, the Deputy Director of Grace Orphan Care, Mr. Jailosi Maonga, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation, emphasizing how vital such contributions are in sustaining the organization’s work. He also urged other individuals and groups to follow suit, ensuring that the orphanage can continue its mission of providing a brighter future for the children it serves.
Mr. Brave Nkhoma, the president of the Social Work Students Society, pointed out that the decision to donate the items to Grace Orphan Care was based on the recognition of the orphanage’s pressing need for support. The donation not only provided tangible goods but also served as a reminder of the power of social work and community collaboration in uplifting marginalized groups.
The event served as an important reminder of the positive impact Social Work students can have in their communities, demonstrating the value of solidarity and care for those in need.
