Profile
Solomon Idyo is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Film and Photography at the University of Malawi, where he contributes to developing a new generation of filmmakers for Malawi and Africa at large. With expertise in screenwriting, acting, directing, and other areas of film production, he is actively involved in delivering on a curriculum that aligns with ever-evolving industry demands. Idyo is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Theatre and Film Arts at the University of Jos, Nigeria, specializing in Film Arts. He had previously earned a Master of Arts (M.A.) Degree in Film Culture & Archival Studies, by the University of Jos/National Film Institute, Jos, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) Degree from the National Film Institute, in affiliation with the University of Jos. Idyo's primary research interests include the Malawian Film Industry, Indigenous Language Films of Africa and Film for Development (FfD). He has published papers in reputable journals, including the "Nigerian Theatre Journal", and has twice facilitated Production Workshop at the National Film Institute, Jos, guiding students to produce short films. Idyo has screenplays in the pipeline for production but aside film, he is a budding playwright and theatre practitioner with play directing experience and three debut plays published in 2010: "The Voice of Conscience", "Another Incorruptible Judge", and "The Solid Girl". The latter two have since undergone transformation into new plays, performed in some high schools in Nigeria and awaiting formal premier and publication. Passionate about the arts, Idyo bridges scholarship, creativity, and industry, contributing to the future of African cinema and theatre.
