Samson Sajidu, the former Acting Principal and Vice Principal of the then Chancellor College of the University of Malawi, is an academic chemist with extensive research and consultancy experiences in water chemistry. His current research interests are in water/wastewater quality, particularly in development of low-cost methods of water pollution control. ,

Samson Sajidu, the former Vice Principal and Acting Principal of the then Chancellor College of the University of Malawi, is an academic chemist with extensive research and consultancy experiences in water chemistry. His current research interests are in water/wastewater quality, particularly in development of low cost methods of water pollution control. He has led and undertaken various researches into identification of water fluoritic areas in Malawi, use of locally sourced materials such as gypysum, bauxite and clays in water defluoridation, use of Moringa oleifera, Moringa stenopetala and clays in heavy metal detoxification in water. His PhD study on ‘characterisation and interaction of mixed alkaline clays and Moringa seed powder with heavy metals in contaminated water’ included advanced modules in soil chemistry at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). He has completed several assignments including determining the general ground water quality and identification of fluoritic areas and related dental flourosis cases in Liwonde, a project funded by the National Research Council of Malawi. Has also identified areas of excessive water fluoride contents in most districts of the Southern Region of Malawi; namely, Nsanje, Chikwawa, Zomba, Machinga and Mangochi. He has been a co-principal investigator in water defluoridation project funded by the International Science Program (ISP) and he supervises several MSc students in Chemistry and environmental sciences. He was a principal investigator of African Union funded project on ‘using IWRM best practices to develop Appropriate Capacity and Training to benefit Sub Saharan Africa Water Security’ implemented by several institutions in Southern Africa. Administratively Samson has attended an international training in Deans Course organised by DAAD (2013/14), an in-house training in corporate governance with Malawi Institute of Management (2013) and also a university leadership and management training organised by DIES UNLEAD Southern Africa (2016).
