Concept Note
Background
The Faculty of Law of the University of Malawi with financial support from the National Bank of Malawi established the LLM (Commercial Law) programme in 2009. This programme was aimed at contributing human capital on commercial law to support growing commerce and the need for commercial justice. The Master’s degree is an 18 months programme of highest standard of teaching law from a contextual and comparative legal perspective and research in commercial law. It offers candidates the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, develop skills and attitudes to further their career or take a new direction.
Since 2012, the programme has produced numerous legal personnel with the expertise to meet the growing demand for specialist knowledge and skills in handling emerging challenges and inspirations of businesses, in international trade and economic law. From prominent judicial officers to successful legal practitioners and business experts, the alumni of the programme are really making a name for the Faculty of Law in the country and beyond.
The programme has also generated research in the field of commercial law and related areas including corporate governance, corporate finance, Banking law, and insolvency. The Faculty of law will host this conference at the end of the month as part of this programme.
Conference Objectives
The Faculty seeks to disseminate knowledge on commercial law and financial regulation from the alumni and lecturers in the programme. It also aims to foster dialogue on important, topical legal issues in the commercial world. More specifically the conference will be a celebration of graduates in the programme and their contribution to knowledge through Master’s theses.
Conference Rationale
The research findings from the research papers and dissertations are relevant to large parts of society including banks, insurance companies, industries and the authorities that they interact with
Participants
The Conference hopes to draw together academics, judges, lawyers, leaders in corporate organisations, financial regulators and business owners into policy debates informed by research findings.
