UNIMA and UniRovuma strengthen ties through English language initiative

The University of Malawi has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various international universities over the past years, including the University of Rovuma in Mozambique. As one way of implementing activities outlined in the MoU, a team of staff members from UNIMA, led by the Executive Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Emmanuel Ngwira, visited the University of Rovuma from 24th to 28th February 2025. The trip was aimed at introducing a course in English language at UniRovuma.

Dr. Ngwira highlighted that the partnership originated from UNIMA’s drive to establish collaborations with universities within the region and beyond. Under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samson Sajidu, UNIMA signed MoUs with several universities in Mozambique, including UniRovuma. Following the signing of the MoU, UNIMA and UniRovuma developed an action plan encompassing various activities, such as introducing English at UniRovuma and Portuguese at UNIMA.

The team, which included members from the Department of Languages, Linguistics, and Classical Studies, delivered intensive English language courses at three levels: beginner, pre-intermediate, and intermediate. This initiative marked the launch of a three-month English language programme designed for both administrative and academic staff members at UniRovuma.

The lessons focused on all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. However, particular emphasis was placed on communicative approaches to enable participants to use English confidently in their daily lives as quickly as possible.

Dr. Peter Kondwani Msaka, Head of the Department of Languages, Linguistics, and Classical Studies, stated that the trip to UniRovuma reflects the School of Humanities and Social Sciences’ commitment to internationalization and fostering global partnerships. “It underscores our dedication to empowering individuals through education, fostering cross-cultural collaboration, and addressing pressing global needs,” he said. “By delivering tailored English programmes, we will not only equip UniRovuma staff with essential language skills but also create new opportunities for personal and professional growth.”

The team employed a communicative language teaching (CLT) approach, which prioritizes real-life communication and practical language use. They incorporated role-plays, group discussions, real-world scenarios, and hands-on activities to create an engaging and immersive learning environment.
